Cancer is among the most common causes of mortality and morbidity in the world, especially after controlling infectious diseases with efforts of scientists like Paul Ehrlich. But in spite of progress in the treatment of various kinds of malignancies, they are still treated by some conventional methods especially chemotherapy.

Conventional chemotherapy is associated with the lack of selectivity for tumor cells. This is the major cause of chemotherapy complications and failure of anticancer agents. Many complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) studies are focused on products obtained from plants, animals or other natural sources to find compounds with high therapeutic index to achieve the curative goals without the side effects.

HESA-A is a natural biological compound. It has shown anticancer properties in different clinical studies.

HESA-A includes mineral constituents (50%), organic constituents (45%) and water (5%). The mineral constituents are a mixture of calcium carbonate, magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate, sodium sulfate, magnesium phosphate, potassium phosphate and sodium phosphate. Low percent of other elements such as Br, Sr, Ti, Mn, Ni, As, Ag, Cu, Zn, W, Tm, Lu TI, Er, Va, Cs, Ba, Te are found in salt or complex forms in HESA-A compound.

Since the extracted organic fraction of HESA-A has shown no significant effects on cancer cells, it could be suggested that the effect of this compound is due to the inorganic trace elements and / or their different complexes.

In toxicological studies, HESA-A did not induce any biochemical, hematological or histopathological signs of toxicity and an oral dose of 5000 mg/kg was estimated as no-observed-adverse-effect-level (NOAEL) for mice and rats.

We recommend further studies to understand the exact mechanisms of action of HESA-A and evaluate its long-term effects on the survival of patients and their quality of life.
